Some of Europe's oldest and most prominent cities will be erased by the sea. Southeast Asian beaches flooded. U.S. city streets to become swamp marshes.
A new study just published documents 49 UNESCO World Heritage Sites (WHS) located in the Mediterranean are threatened by sea-level rise. Approximately one third of these WHS are located in Italy (15), followed by Croatia (7), Greece (4), and Tunisia (4).
The sea level has risen 8 inches since 1990. Scientists project that the sea level will rise another 2 to 7 feet by the end of the century. The increase is due to the heat caused by CO2 emissions trapped in our atmosphere, which serves as the catalyst for the melting ice sheets across the globe.
